Bottom of the Hill Proofreading and Editing rates

March 5th, 2012

Recently we have been asked about our editing and proofreading services and rates. Our answer has been “We supply our client authors with these services but not as items on their own.” Well, we have been convinced to reconsider. For 2012, in addition to offering publishing services we now offer expert proofreading, editing and book design services.

This expansion allows us to work with authors searching for a publisher as well as those wanting help cleaning up their work. Our Editing Services include; Proofreading, Editing, Rewriting, Interior Design, and Cover Design.

For our Editing Services we charge by the page. By using this rate method it will be easy for you to calculate how much an edit will actually cost. The industry standard for a page is 250 words.

Let’s say your work has 35,000 words, your page count would be 35,000/250=140 pages. Now multiply your page count, in this example 140, by the service rate you desire, say Basic Proofing at $2.50 per page, and you get the cost, $350.

Using this pricing method you have no concern whether your manuscript is in the right font or type size. You don’t have to wonder if the job will take 5 hours or 25 hours.

Proofreading

Basic Proofreading includes proofing for spelling errors, capitalization errors, typos, punctuation, and grammar.

$2.50 per page

Final Proofing is offered for works that need a quick read through by a new set of trained eyes looking for minor errors.

$1.50 per page

Editing

Basic Editing includes proofreading as well as attention to sentence structure, awkward wording, sense, general clarity, consistency throughout the work and redundancies.

$3.50 per page

Rewriting

Rewriting or Deep Editing includes aggressive editing, reworking your text to improve poor sentence construction, reorganizing blocks of information, improving the overall readability and story flow. With the Rewriting option all changes, notes and suggestions are highlighted for easy review.

$15 per page

Turnaround time is 7 to 10 business days from the date we receive your document. Rush jobs, those needed in fewer than seven days, are accepted from time to time but arrangements must be made in advance. There will be an additional fee for rush jobs.

All rates quoted are in U.S. dollars. There is a minimum charge of $45.00 per job. These rates apply to electronic editing of Microsoft Word documents. If your document is in another format, there may be an additional charge.

We accept payments through PayPal including Visa and MasterCard.

High Lonesome Cover Sneak Preview

October 18th, 2011

Herb Marlow's High Lonesome Cover Herb Marlow’s newest release, High Lonesome, will feature cover art by Lorna Dillon.

Each part of the West has its own distinctive characteristics that encompass geography, history and culture.  Lorna Dillon sets her painting in rural California, home of many Spanish land grants and rolling foothills.  The influence of the vaqueros and their elegant horsemanship is so classical that their legacy comes to life under her brush.

As a child, Dillon was intrigued by paintings in her family home.  Her fascination was profound and the seed was planted.  It lay dormant until the late 70’s when Lorna took up painting to see if her interest could be developed.  She followed a long and laborious path filled with much trial and error, studying the styles, composition and techniques of other artists whose work she admired.

Gradually her style developed and her interests aimed her towards the western art genre.  Livestock trade shows did double duty as both a source of subjects and sales.  There she learned more about the animals and their various characteristics, sold a lot of art, gained discipline and brush mileage, and most importantly, Lorna says, “I met a lot of wonderful people in the livestock industry.”  The ranching life felt very natural to her and she found the ambiance warm and genuine.  Success and her reputation in the field grew.

After many years of this self-supporting and self-taught effort, workshops became a springboard for her to really begin to mature as an artist.  Many well-known regional shows in the Western states led to her inclusion in the prestigious Prix de West Invitational at the National Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City for many years.  That event has been “the pinnacle of my career” according to Dillon.  She says, “I thank God for the guidance and the gifts that made it all possible.”

The cover image is a painting entitled SPRING RUNOFF.  It is just one fine example of Lorna Dillon’s art.  You can see more of her highly creative images at www.lornadillon.com.

High Lonesome by Herb Marlow

October 15th, 2011

Look for Herb Marlow’s High Lonesome in bookstores November 3rd.

Once again Dr. Herb Marlow entertains us, this time with characters of the old west.  In High Lonesome, we meet Trapper Stark, Clint Morgan, Ralph Giddings, Jerry Miller, Alan Kidd and Larry Hardwell.  Each man with his own lonesome life is striving to or eventually successfully living a moral life.

For some it seems to be more difficult, for others it comes naturally and is welcomed.  One may win the heroine, while others leave, not with regrets but giving thought to how life might have been if he had remained.  Which is the right way to go?  For one man, settling down becomes the comfortable way but for others, what is over the next hill continues to beckon him on and on……

The six exciting stories in High Lonesome include Trapper’s Wife, Buffalo Gap, Forty-Four Caliber Justice, Hawken 50, The Wolfer and Gone at Midnight.  Fans of western life of the 1800’s will find this collection hard to put down.
This is Herb Marlow’s latest book for Bottom of the Hill Publishing.  When Dr. Marlow isn’t writing or caring for his small Texas ranch, he conducts a limited pastoral counseling practice through face-to-face encounters and a unique Internet-based, on-line counseling service.

Minister Wanted: Santa Fe Coming Soon

June 23rd, 2011

Look for the next installment in Dr. Herb Marlow’s Minister Wanted series soon. Minister Wanted: Santa Fe is now in final edit and is scheduled for release by July 1st.

In Herb’s own words MinisterWanted.com “…is a very unusual (and exciting) treatment of a Christian ministers’ quest to follow God’s calling without the burden of administrative duties. Dr. Charles Miller is a believable man of God, with practical faith, and a way of relating it to others. That would be enough, but the author has also added a mystery and its solution to the mix, along with a romantic sideline.”

Minister Wanted: Santa Fe follows Dr. Charles Miller from Ruidoso to Santa Fe to pastor the Living Word Community Church. Rebuilding the congregation will not be the only challenge he faces.

Look for Minister Wanted: Santa Fe in August 2011.
